Key takeaways

  • In the upper echelons of EVs are the supercars setting speed records
  • The Rimac Nevara Time Attack is the fastest EV supercar in the world
  • The Tesla Roadster and Ariel Hipercar are two cheaper options, though the latter is still a concept car

Sometimes, you don’t want sensible: you’ve got a need for speed. Electric vehicles (EVs) are known for being an environmentally friendlier alternative to gas cars, but they’re also some of the fastest cars on the planet.

We’ve compiled a list of the fastest EVs that money can buy and fair warning: these are not your standard cars, complete with a standard price tag. But they are fun to drive and pretty to look at. Here’s a rundown of the fastest EVs on the market in 2023 and their cost if you win the lottery one day (or hit it big with investing).

Which are the fastest EVs on the market?

Rimac Nevara Time Attack

With a name like that, you know this EV is built to smash records. And it has — the Time Attack set a lap record at the world-famous Nürburgring driving track for EVs with a time of 7:05.289, beating the previous record holder, the Tesla Model S Plaid, by 20 seconds.

That’s no small feat. But the Time Attack didn’t stop there — it set record times for the 0–60mph, 0–100mph and 0–186mph categories. This year, it was also the fastest EV at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

As the fastest verified EV in the world, with a top speed of 256 mph, the Nevara Time Attack will set you back a cool $2.4 million in cash — if you’re in the market.

Tesla Roadster

We’d be remiss not to include a word on Tesla’s fastest EV offering, the Roadster model (the same one that Elon blasted into space). The second-gen version of the Roadster boasts a top performance speed of 250 mph and above, 0–62 mph in less than two seconds and, impressively, a 600-mile range.

First unveiled in 2017, at the time, Musk said the Roadster would be the “fastest production car ever made, period.” As for the price, a Tesla Roadster will only set you back a modest $200,000.

Ariel Hipercar

If Batman built an EV, the Ariel Hipercar would be it. Complete with four motors and hitting 0–62mph in less than two seconds, the Hipercar delivers on style and substance. Made by small indie British car maker Ariel, the Hipercar has a 62kWh drive battery under the cabin floor to calm any concerns about running out of charge.

While the Hipercar is still in the prototype phase, Ariel accepts pre-orders for the shiny new EV. And how much would that cost? “Under a million at current prices”, says Ariel.

The bottom line

Plenty of high-end supercar EVs are coming onto the market, though few of them are in production and available for sale. But the proofs-of-concept are already exciting and indicate a bright future for the development and innovation of EVs over the next decade.
