Key takeaways

  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the next milestone for those working in artificial intelligence
  • Experts differ on when we’ll achieve AGI
  • All the big players in AI are working toward it

Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, is widely considered the pinnacle of artificial intelligence. While AI solves specific problems and can communicate like a human — think ChatGPT answering a question for you — AGI can actually reason like a person. While different definitions for AGI exist, they all encompass the ability to: “evaluate complex situations, apply common sense, and learn and adapt,” according to Axios.

Speaking of AI solving specific problems: Q.ai’s Emerging Tech Kit uses AI to identify leading technology stocks to provide a balance of diversified investments across the technology industry and capture upside from the best and brightest in the business.

When is AGI coming?

This spring, Microsoft AI scientists published research saying that OpenAI’s latest language model “shows sparks”of AGI. Their use of the word “sparks” indicates that we’re headed toward AGI, not that we’re there already.

The Microsoft researches concluded: “Given the breadth and depth of GPT-4’s capabilities…we believe that it could reasonably be viewed as an early (yet still incomplete) version of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system.”

Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google have all claimed to be in various states of closing in on AGI. But there are skeptics for sure. In a May New York Times article, Carnegie Mellon professor Maarten Sap said, “The ‘Sparks of A.G.I.’ is an example of some of these big companies co-opting the research paper format into P.R. pitches.”

So, the jury is out on where exactly we stand on the next frontier of artificial (general) intelligence.

What to look out for in terms of AGI investing

We’re still in a theoretical place with AGI, so there’s no way to put money into it right now. It’s also worth noting that AGI — if and when developed — could pose some real risks. Cue the AI- gone-rogue sci-fi plot.

For now, we’re keeping an eye on the established companies we know are in the AI game, like Google and Microsoft for example, and also on up-and-comers making the headlines, like Anthropic and Cohere.

The bottom line

AI research is ongoing and we’re sure to see progress in the coming years. We’re just not sure exactly what the breakthroughs will look like or when we can expect them.

To stay ahead of the curve, leverage the Emerging Tech Kit from Q.ai. The Kit compares companies like Microsoft to peers like Apple, and, at the same time, it compares newer tech companies with other its peers. Basically, this kit helps you to invest across the technology landscape with a combination of diversification and timely security selection. No matter what happens with AGI, you’ll be ready.
