Key takeaways

  • Microsoft is launching an AI assistant, Copilot, for its Windows 11 operating system
  • The stock price dipped 2% at the announcement
  • With Windows as the incumbent OS on most computers, it could be a huge win for Microsoft in the AI wars

First, it was the Bing chatbot. Then it was the enterprise apps. And now, Microsoft’s operating system is the latest to get the AI treatment. The Big Tech titan that’s forging the path forward in AI has announced the tech is coming in the form of a new Windows assistant (we assume Cortana has been given the boot). Let’s get into the details.

What is Microsoft’s latest AI announcement?

Microsoft will be adding an AI-powered assistant to its Windows 11 operating system. It’ll be available across all apps and programs and can do the usual nifty AI things we’ve now come to expect, including summarizing and explaining content. It’ll also act as Bing does in that you can ask it general questions like you would a search engine.

Microsoft will also allow developers to write plug-ins for the Copilot assistant and extend any written for Bing or ChatGPT to work with Copilot. It will begin testing the Copilot publicly in June before it’s rolled out widely later this year.

It’s a big play from Microsoft, whose Windows operating system is dominant across most computing platforms. This latest move could turn the tide in the AI wars as Microsoft extends its reach into the public’s psyche as the AI leader.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates certainly seems to think so: he commented earlier this week that whoever wins the personal assistant race wins AI “because you will never go to a search site again, you will never go to a productivity site, you’ll never go to Amazon again.”

What was the market reaction?

Microsoft has been riding the AI wave this year, with the stock up 33% since the start of 2023. The announcement saw Microsoft stock briefly dip 2%, though the entire market is riddled with uncertainty right now thanks to the ongoing debt-ceiling crisis.

Microsoft shares are currently hovering around $313, with some analysts believing it could go to $400 thanks to Microsoft’s positioning with AI. If the Windows Copilot rollout is a success, this could come true.

The bottom line

Microsoft is powering through with integrating AI into as many of its products as quickly as possible. It could be a stock market play to show strength against Google in the AI wars, but it’s likely also to do with making its AI investment as profitable as possible, as quickly as possible. We’re sure users will be clamoring to use Windows Copilot when it’s available.
