A secret meeting amongst the richest and most influential people in the world? The top AI business leaders? Chatham House rules? Nothing could go wrong, right?!

We kid. The annual Bilderberg meeting takes place this week, a discussion between the upper echelons of society that’s shrouded in mystery. It’s hot on the heels of the U.S. congressional hearing about AI safety and regulation — perhaps Bilderberg attendees are looking for similar assurances. Here’s the lowdown.

What is the Bilderberg meeting?

Right now, a select group of business leaders and politicians are in Lisbon to talk about — well, nobody really knows for sure. Originally intended as a way for Europe and North America to foster relations and avoid another world war, this year, artificial intelligence is likely to be top of the agenda.

And the big AI guns are definitely there. The likes of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, DeepMind head Demis Hassabis and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt are all gracing the meeting with their presence. They’ll be rubbing shoulders with the likes of former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Big Tech investor Peter Thiel and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, among many others.

Why are they there?

We all know that AI presents opportunities and risks for the world, which has sparked both delight and concern. The rapid rise of AI with the likes of ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Bard without any regulation in place has increased calls for the industry to be brought in line.

Altman was one of three to testify in a U.S. congressional hearing earlier this week about how AI should be regulated. He argued a number of measures should be introduced as soon as possible, including an agency giving and taking away company licenses, mandatory independent audits and a standard set of safety rules.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the bigwigs at the Bilderberg meeting agree with his approach or whether they have other ideas entirely. We’ll never know for sure.

The bottom line

It’s always a little eyebrow-raising when the world elites get together to discuss super top-secret stuff. But we can only hope the “fostering dialogue” results in a positive discourse about how AI companies can work in partnership with governments to help humans at work, play and life.
