What EVs will we see on the road soon?
Here are a few from the biggest names in the industry that are right around the corner this year or next.
Chevrolet: The Blazer EV is a midsized SUV with a range of up to 320 miles. It will go head-to-head with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4 in terms of price and capabilities. Also from Chevrolet, the Silverado EV is built on General Motors’ unique EV-only Ultium platform. According to GM, this truck can go 0 to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds.
Honda: Interestingly, Honda is launching its all-new Prologue in 2024 in co-development with General Motors. Honda is calling this ride an “adventure ready” electric SUV.
Hyundai: Hyundai is releasing a redesigned Kona with both a short- and long-range battery. According to the automaker, the Kona can go from 10 to 80% state of charge in 41 minutes using a public DC-fast charger.
Jeep: If you love the ready-for-adventure look of a Wrangler, then the Jeep Recon is for you. It’s ready to compete with the Ford Bronco and Land Rover Defender.
Toyota: We covered the Toyota Stout already because its an EV truck generating some buzz. We’re anticipating a real comeback for the compact truck market — but make it electric.
Tesla: The Tesla Cybertruck is a very….fashion-forward, all-electric pickup. The avant-garde look is all thanks to a hard stainless steel “exoskeleton” that’s sort of more airplane than truck.
Volkswagen: The Volkswagen ID.7 midsized electric sedan is similar in size to the retired Passat sedan, but a bit roomier.
What do all these snazzy EVs mean for the market?
In Europe, EV sales rose by over 15% in 2022. Sales in the United States jumped 55% in the same period. Tesla is the industry leader — still about 300,000 units ahead of Hyundai and GM in sales.
Whether legacy automakers can overtake disruptors remains to be seen, but some of these new releases show that they’re absolutely going to try.
The bottom line
It’s too early to tell who the winners and losers of the EV boom will be, but if feels like almost every automaker is vying for a piece of the pie.
