What’s a stock market holiday?
A stock market holiday is when the two biggest U.S. stock exchanges, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite, shut down for the day. It’s usually in line with a national holiday, like Thanksgiving or the upcoming Independence Day, that the markets also take a break.
If a national holiday falls on a weekend, the markets can compensate for it by closing on either the Friday before it occurs or the Monday after. Over-the-counter markets and the bonds markets also shut down for the day, too.
Which days will the stock market be closed for the rest of 2023?
We just saw the U.S. markets close for Juneteenth, which was observed on the 19th of June this year. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, increasing the days off that the U.S. markets have each year.
The remaining federal holidays that will close down the U.S. markets for the rest of the year are:
- Tuesday 4th July 2023: Independence Day
- Monday 4th September 2023: Labor Day
- Thursday 23rd November 2023: Thanksgiving
- Monday 25th December 2023: Christmas Day
For the investors looking to get their investing fix when the markets are closed, fear not. The U.S. stock exchanges are the only markets that observe U.S. federal holidays, so international exchanges like the London Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange remain open for business (unless their holidays coincide, such as with Christmas Day).
The bottom line
Every stock exchange has its own days off, and four more are coming up for the rest of the year that will affect the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite. If you can’t bear the thought of a day away from trading, we’d recommend testing out the international stock markets — and using AI to help you make smarter decisions, too.
