What is the Tesla Cybertruck?
You’ve possibly heard of the Cybertruck after an official Tesla demonstration of the pickup’s capabilities in Los Angeles went awry. And viral. In this unveiling, Elon Musk confidently asks his engineer to try and break the supposedly unbreakable armor glass windows.
We don’t want to spoil the fun for you if you want to watch the video, so let’s just say they’re not very armor-y. Moving swiftly on.
The Cybertruck is Tesla’s first venture into electric pickup trucks. As pickup trucks represent about 20% of all vehicles on US roads and 20% of new vehicle purchases, this is a very smart business move from Tesla. The Cybertruck will potentially enable the company to corner a huge section of the market and get more clean vehicles on the road.
It also offers some pretty cool features like 100 cubic feet of lockable exterior storage, 14,000lb (6.35 tons) towing power, and suspension self-leveling capabilities.
With prices initially stated to range from $39,000–$70,000, it’s not a cheap buy, but it’s pretty competitive compared to Ford’s F-150 Lightning, ranging from $60,000–$100,000. Of course, Ford has an advantage here as it’s already producing the truck and accepting preorders. Plus, Musk has refused to comment on updated pricing, so it may enter the market higher than anticipated.
When is the Cybertruck coming out?
While Musk has been promoting the truck on social media, he’s not confirmed a mass production start date. On the positive side, the Cybertruck Delivery Event invites for Austin, Texas, are live and available for 30,000 credits through Tesla’s referral program.
All you have to do is refer a measly three people to buy a Tesla Model 3 or Y to gain 10,000 credits apiece and redeem them for your invite. Know three people with $45,000 lying around? You’re in!
Dates for the event aren’t confirmed, but it’s due to happen in late Q3, according to Musk.
How’s TSLA doing?
The constant influx of news makes TSLA a volatile rollercoaster ride for investors. It’s also something of a meme stock, adding extra volatility and dramatic price swings.
The last week saw lows of $221 and highs of $241. Currently, it’s down 6.7% over the month, but the six-month view looks rosier at almost 15% up.
The bottom line
As ever, we’re awaiting Tesla news with bated breath as we never know which way the market will go after Musk tweets (sorry, X-s?). The Cybertruck is a potentially awesome clean tech offering, and we can’t wait to see it eventually hit the market.
